Wednesday 23rd October, 2019

Dear Members

Bula Vinita, Namaste, Assalamo-alikum and Noa’ia e mau’ri. Blessed October to you all.

We, the FMA executives hereby are pleased to announce that the 62nd Annual Scientific Conference will be held at the Shangri La Fijian Resort in Sigatoka from the 4th to the 7th of September 2020. The theme for next year’s conference is “Collaboration is the New Innovation for Health”. As you may have deduced already, this is during the Constitution Day long weekend to enable you ample time to plan your work schedule for you to attend what will be "The best Conference Ever". You can be assured that the FMA Executive Council is working tirelessly behind the scenes in planning what will be the biggest and best Conference to date.

Two things are essential in bringing an event like this to fruition and they are time and money. True to the old adage "If you fail to plan then you plan to fail", we are setting the wheels in motion well ahead of time to ensure that next year’s conference will be an event to savor and one that you will buzz about for a significant time afterwards. We will do our bit and we trust that as enthusiastic, eager beavers; you will start your own financial planning to enable you to attend this event. If you start putting aside $100.00 every payday into your "conference savings account" starting November, then come end of June 2020 you will have enough money to pay for 3 nights’ accommodation at the Shangri La Fijian resort plus your Conference registration fees.

If the money you save up is in danger of being utilized for reasons other than its intended purpose, then we can also assist you by getting you to put the money directly into FMA coffers and we can monitor and safeguard it for you so that you can safely be sipping a Pina colada at the Black Marlin Bar at the Fijian on the 4th of September, 2019. For the more frugal connoisseurs, we will also provide you with a list of cheaper hotels within the vicinity of the Shangri La resort so that you can save a few valuable dollars. We want maximal attendance at this conference so we will do the utmost in our capacity to make this happen.

For those of you who cannot make it to the ASC in September, we will be organizing 3 mini-conferences in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa so that you can get an appetizer to the main event. The dates for the mini conferences are as follows:

  1. Suva – Saturday April 18th, 2020
  2. Lautoka – Saturday May 16th, 2020
  3. Labasa – Saturday June 20th, 2020

It is important for colleagues working in the same station to be good team players and plan well ahead of time in terms of who will attend what. We trust that you all will make mutually beneficial and inclusive plans well ahead of time so that everyone in your station has a chance of attending either the mini-conference or the main conference.

The month of October is deemed the cancer awareness month especially for breast cancer. FMA expresses its support for all the awareness activities surrounding breast cancer. As you are all aware, Breast Cancer is the number 1 cause of cancer mortality in Fiji for Females. Sadly, most patients who present to health facilities do so at a locally advanced or metastatic stage. We can aim for curative intent when the disease is in the early stages but for metastatic disease unfortunately, cure is not possible. We must all become advocates for dissemination of information to our communities to take ownership of their health and seek medical advice early. Please do take time out from your busy schedules to support and help spread awareness to your communities regarding breast cancer. The message that needs to go out is for women to do breast self-examination regularly and seek medical attention urgently if they feel a lump or have any other worrying symptoms.

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

Vinaka vakalevu, Daniyabaad, Fa’eksia and Khuda Hafiz.
